A Dutch auction is a type of online auction selling format a seller might use if he or she is listing multiple identical items for sale.

In a Dutch auction, buyers specify the quantity of the items they would like to purchase and the amount they are willing to pay for each one.

Winning bids are determined by multiplying the bid price by the number of items bid on.

A Dutch auction is also known as a multiple item auction.

Read on to learn more about how Dutch auctions work.

Dutch Auction Example

The seller has, for example, 100 staplers up for auction. All winning bidders will pay the exact same price, no matter what their bid was. The price of the stapler will be the lowest bid that is successful or a winning bid. The top 125 bids would be considered successful bids.

Each stapler is considered a separate bid. One bidder bids on five staplers = five bids.

Two different things can happen; 100 staplers available, starting price is $4. A total of 90 staplers have been bid on, with bids ranging from $4 to $10. All bidders will get the staplers for $4. Each and all bids were successful and winning bids. 100 staplers are available, but there have been 150 bids, ranging from $4 to $10. The top 100 bids are the only ones considered and the lowest of THOSE 100 bids will be the successful bid price.

The easiest way to keep an eye is watch the auction current price, that’s the bid for the 100th stapler and the price all will pay if the auction ends right then. No one pays more than anyone else, no matter what they bid.

Fixed Price: The seller has 100 staplers, all the same, and is willing to sell them for $4 each. They would be listed as a quantity of 100 and a price of $4. Buyers can buy any number that is still available, at the $4 price and at any time during the auction.

Remember, the higher bidders get first dibs on multiple quantities. So if the lowest bidder wants multiple quantities of the item on the block, he or she may find that there aren’t enough to go around. If only a partial quantity is available, the bidder can officially walk away from his or her bid.

When a potential buyer bids on multiple copies of the item, those toward the end of the list may not get the quantity they desire. Still using our T-shirt example, if the top bidder wants three shirts, the remaining shirts are distributed among the next seven bidders-leaving the last or lowest two bidders out in the cold.

Tips on Bidding in Dutch Auctions

Dutch auctions actually benefit the buyer more than any other type of auction by letting higher bidders pay the lowest bid price. Should you bid on a Dutch auction? Why not? If someone is selling something you want, by all means, bid!

How much should you bid? Ah, there’s the issue. I actually like bidding on Dutch auctions later in the game so that I can get a handle on how many other bidders I’m competing with. The number of bidders versus the quantity of items available determines my strategy:

If the seller has a large quantity of items and a small number of bidders, bid the minimum. In this scenario, everybody wins because there’s more than enough merchandise to go around.

If the seller has a small quantity of items and a large number of bidders, you probably should bid higher than the minimum. In fact, in this scenario, treat it like a normal auction and bid the highest amount you’re willing to pay.

The worst thing that could happen is you lose the auction; the second worst is that you’re a winning bidder and you have to pay your maximum bid; the best scenario is that you’re a winning bidder but get to pay a lower amount (because of a lower bid entered by another winning bidder).

As an eBay member your Feedback Profile, which includes basic information about you and your Feedback that trading partners have left for you.

Building trust has a lot to do with what your past buyers or sellers have to say. For each transaction, buyers and sellers rate you by leaving Feedback.

Each Feedback consists of a positive, negative, or neutral rating, and comments.

A buyer can also rate the seller on additional criteria, including accuracy of item description, communication, shipping time, and shipping and handling charges.

These detailed seller ratings do not count toward the Feedback Score.

Leaving honest comments about eBay members gives other Community members a good idea of what to expect when dealing with that person. Always remember that Feedback becomes a permanent part of your Feedback Profile.

Feedback ratings are used to determine each member’s Feedback Score:

A positive rating adds one point to the Feedback Score.

A neutral rating has no impact on the Feedback Score.

A negative rating subtracts one point from the Feedback Score.

The higher the Feedback Score, the more positive ratings a member has received. However, a member can increase or decrease another member’s score by only one point no matter how many transactions they have completed with each other.

The Feedback Score and the corresponding Feedback star are shown next to every member’s user ID. A Feedback Score of at least 10 earns you a yellow star.

As your Feedback Score increases, you can earn different colored stars all the way to a red shooting star for a score above 100,000. You want to earn trust and confidence with other eBay members by building your Feedback Profile and earning the highest star possible.

Before you set up your eBay Store, you’ll want to build some Positive Feedback for your account — this is almost standard practice and advice for anyone just starting out on eBay. It’s going to cost you a little bit, but the easiest and fastest way to get positive feeback is to buy stuff from trusted eBay members who have lots of feedback.

Once you get 10 positive feedback ratings, you’ll have your first eBay star. At that point you can start selling.

The most important aspect of an eBay business is developing trust with your customers, so that they can help build your brand through word of mouth advertising and also to ensure they come back to purchase more items from you.

One of the easiest ways to build trust is to show that others trust you and that is how eBay maintains such a healthy marketplace.

The Barrett Jackson Auto Auction, the infamous Arizona car auction event of the year, has led to an increasing number of car aficionados looking to buy or sell their own car in an online car auction venue.

In 1960, in the desert of Scottsdale, Arizona, Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett met over an advertised car for sale.

While they did not complete the sale, a friendship was born that lives on in their legacy today.

Seven years later, Barrett and Jackson held a fundraiser for local charities by holding a local car show.

This set the wheels in motion for them to start preparations for their first Arizona car auction in 1971.

They featured the first “Classic Car” auction and the stars were vehicles from their own private collections. Barrett’s Mercedes 770 Phaeton sold for $153,000 turning collectors’ heads and stealing industry headlines. It also threw the pair into international prominence.

During the 1980’s, the emergence of the car collector industry literally sprung out from nowhere, with record participation and record prices. The friend’s continued to set the standard for excellence, with Barrett bringing only the finest cars and earning the reputation as the “Grandfather of the Collector Car Industry” while Jackson collected restored cars for the auction. It was during this time frame that Jackson brought his sons, Brian and Craig to the team.

Russ Jackson passed away in 1993, and his son Brian in 1995. Tom Barrett, who had retired in 1997, passed away just a few years ago in 2004. It is now Craig Jackson running this horse and pony show, and just has his predecessors, leading the way in innovation, techniques and sales.

Speedvision began airing portions of the Arizona car auction in 1997, and at the same time introduced a new concept to buyers- live time Internet bidding! Last year, the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction sold a total of 1,250 cars with a mind numbing $112 million dollars in sales!

In 2002 Barrett Jackson took their car auction across the country to Palm Beach, Florida, where they will have their Sixth annual Palm Beach Car Auction on March 26-30 2008.

The two men single-handedly revolutionized car auctions and Craig Jackson led even further in the introduction of the online car auction.

While deep pockets are essentially mandatory to participate with Barrett Jackson, online car auctions are now a popular way for the “common” man and woman to buy and sell their cars.

Before we all jump on the bandwagon and hit Ebay Motors trying to find our own “deal”, there are several things to keep in mind, as buyers, and sellers when using an online auction site.

Tips for Sellers

When selling your car at an online auction site, there are several factors you need to consider. Not only will they help you get a better price for you car, it will also help protect yourself.

Have the VIN and detailed carfax report available to prospective bidders. It is a wise idea to go ahead and put the VIN in the auction listing, as you are almost certain to receive requests for it.

Photos! LOTS of photos! Inside, outside, front seat, back seat, motor, trunk, tires, inspection sticker, VIN number, odometer. Get the “picture”? Yes, even include photos of dents, dings, scratches, all the flaws too! If it’s something someone would look at in person to buy the car, you need to have a GOOD photo of it in your auction! Make sure your car is clean. No one wants to buy a dirty one! If you are not capable of taking good photos, find someone who is!

Sound exited about your car! Even if it’s a 1972 Ford Pinto piece of rusted tin, make it sound appealing…maybe “Great Starter car for New Driver!”

Don’t lie about the condition though. While you don’t have to reveal every flaw, its in your best interest to reveal anything that may detour a buyer- check engine light, drive train problems, mileage…you get the picture!

Competitive Pricing. When using an online auction, no matter what the item- whether it’s a toaster or a Ferrari Enzo, know what its worth! Sure, you can start the bidding at a penny if you so desire, but a good rule of thumb (and one I follow religiously) is NEVER start the auction at a price LOWER than what you can live with. It will be your luck (and mine too) that the car I listed with a starting bid of $99 – actually sold for that price!

Put a sign on it! Almost everyone these days is capable of printing a sign from their computer with the website address of where their car is being sold! Buyers can go look at the car when its convenient to them, and not have to worry about interrupting your dinner, or shower- just to find out its not what they want or need. Not to mention, if they know its online, they can make the reasonable assumption millions of people are looking at it and might buy it out from under them, thus causing them to move a little quicker than they otherwise might!

Maintenance Records are important! You need to have every piece of paper regarding any work that was done to the car – oil changes, brake work, new tires, repairs, body or paint work, etc!

Tips for Buyers

Know the Seller! Does the site offer the ability to view a sellers feedback? I know, as an Ebay seller myself, my feedback is invaluable to me! I work hard to please my customers. Whether it is the $300 PSP I just sold, or a .99 cent dress pattern, I want them all to be happy!

Ask the Seller questions! If they are legitimate and serious, they will get back to you within a reasonable timeframe. This will also let you know how knowledgeable they are about the car.

How does the seller want payment? On Ebay, it against TOS (Terms of Service) to state cash only. But that does not mean that a scammer will try to get around it. While Paypal is not recommended for such large purchases, you do want a paper trail. Cashiers checks are the best option for this type of transaction. Even better, credit card (but again, this would require the seller to have a merchant account). I do not (can I say that enough times?) recommend Paypal for an ebay motors transaction!

When does the Seller require payment? If he insists on immediate upfront payment, the odds of you seeing your car, or money are slim to none. While you do want to pay promptly, and make sure you maintain good communication with the seller, if they insist on payment the day or the day after the auction ends, it’s a big (huge, flaming red on fire) warning sign!

Is there a return policy? What is the shipping rate if you cannot pick it up in person? Does the seller have a transport company chosen already, or are you required to make those arrangements yourself?

Online Car Auctions are fun! Just remember to protect yourself! So you may not have $4 million to drop on a Vintage Classic car in pristine condition, but that doesn’t mean the online car auctions are only for the wealthy! Be safe, do your research, on the car and on the seller. Find a car you love. And most of all… HAVE FUN!

Online auctions have opened the door as never before for more people to buy and sell jewelry and antiques.

Whether it’s an antique auction that caught your eye, or a jewelry auction with a pretty little bracelet, there are common denominators to selling or buying these items that you should keep in mind.

The main thing is know what you are selling or buying!

Antique guides, appraisers and jewelers are invaluable when it comes to researching your item.

Read on to learn more about buying (or selling) antique items on eBay!

If you are selling, you need to put all pertinent information in your auction listing, and include clear photographs of maker’s marks, distinguishing features, flaws, and the piece as a whole.

When dealing with antique auctions, you need to learn the distinguishing marks that are common in such pieces.

With furniture, sharp edges and corners can mean it was made more recently. Wear marks are to be expected on seats of chairs and legs of chairs and tables. Handmade dovetails are large and uneven, while machine-made dovetails are even.

With Silver pieces, anything marked “sterling” was made post 1860, while earlier pieces have a makers mark or initials- finding pieces such as these are quite rare! If you are selling an antique of any kind, you should have it professionally appraised and do as much research on the piece as possible. This will build confidence from your buyers, and make a better auction listing when you can provide such detailed information.

With Jewelry auctions, you are largely at the seller’s word of what it is. You should always ask if you can have a copy of the appraisal before you purchase. This will let you know whether the piece is genuine or man made, and what the carat weight is of the stone and setting. It will also let you know whether the setting has any “fillers”, which can detract from the value of the piece.

If you buy a piece of jewelry, take it to a jeweler to have it appraised when you receive it. This way, if there is any discrepancy over the material you have a professional’s certification of the item for your dispute, should the seller not be cooperative in handling a return or exchange.

If you are selling a piece of jewelry, you should have it appraised and have it available for prospective buyers. Use a light box (instructions to make one are easily found online) so you get a good, clear photo. Take photos from several angles, and make sure you include carat weight and relevant quality information.

When shipping this treasure, make sure it is insured for its full value and get tracking information for the package. If it is a large piece of furniture, it may be in your best interest to have it professionally packaged.

When you purchase an antique or a piece of jewelry on an auction site (or anything, for that matter), pay with Paypal through a credit card. This way, if something happens, you can get your money back if necessary.

With a little bit of research and a good appraiser nearby, buying or selling your jewelry or antique can be en enjoyable experience for everyone involved!

The largest interactive online jewelry auction, the unique Bidz auction format starts items at a $1 minimum bid amount and no reserve, with new items appearing every 5 seconds.

Whether you are looking for an engagement ring, a diamond bracelet, a pair of ruby earrings, or a contemporary time piece, Bidz offers a wide array of jewelry assortment, low prices, and the only interactive auction experience online.

Already, over 4.5 million people choose to shop for jewelry at Bidz.

Bidz is the number one online site for anyone wanting jewelry; you can find rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches and many other fine items. I have been using Bidz for a couple of years and bought many items well under retail … and many that are not available elsewhere.

The Web site offers a simple interface that is easy to use and to navigate. Membership is free and registration only takes a few minutes and then you can start bidding on items. You may want to research items to compare the retail and second hand price before bidding; however you find that many items on Bidz sell far below the retail price.

Payment options include PayPal and all major credit cards. All U.S. orders are shipped through either USPS or Fed Ex and shipping rates are reasonable, determined by item category.

Bidz offers up to 95% off gold jewelry, engagement rings, watches, diamond jewelry, and much more. Searching for the perfect engagement ring? At Bidz one can get a huge variety of designer engagement rings that are more than affordable. There are a variety of different size diamond carat rings and the design styles range from classic to modern.

Along with its unique, affordable inventory, Bidz offers a 100% Money-Back Guarantee on all merchandise. The largest online auction house of its kind, Bidz contains many elements that set itself apart from the growing number of competitive, similar sites.

With only a $1.00 minimum opening bid on any item, Bidz offers a highly interactive and unique online bidding experience. Once $1.00 or more has opened an item for bidding, bidders can watch the time remaining in real time and bid multiple times as the bid amount increases, or may choose to let the item go if the bid price gets too high although, as with most online auctions, bids may not be retracted once placed.

This bidding format may be the next best thing to experiencing a live auction, and the entertainment factor alone is worth giving Bidz a try. Auctions continue until all bids are received. Once an item is sold, the actual retail value and winning bid are displayed. It is common to see an item with a retail value over $500 sell for a little as $25 or $50.

Bidz provides an alternative liquidation channel for designers and distributors; "Bidz brings together the fragmented supply and demand of excess jewelry products in a single online location." The low purchase price Bidz pays for products allows for the requirement of only $1.00 as a minimum opening bid. This small bid requirement, in turn, allows customers complete control over the price they pay for the products.

In addition, with all products housed onsite in Bidz inventory, customers can rely on timely delivery of their purchases."

Bidz also provides a regular source of product for resellers who resell their goods through alternative channels including retail locations, eBay, Yahoo stores and other online eCommerce channels. Resellers are often able to get product on Bidz at lower prices than they could from large distributors or manufacturers directly.

If you haven’t tried Bidz yet, you are definitely missing out on a unique jewelry auction experience and huge savings on your jewelry and gift item purchases. Register for free and see why people are raving about Bidz!

This article teaches you winning auction bidding methods, based my years of experience on eBay and other online auction sites.

These techniques work, and we share them with you so you, too, can increase your odds of finding and winning auctions.

Your bidding strategy will affect how many auctions you will win.

Why? Because most people follow the same bidding patterns, which don’t optimize their chances of winning.

Try These Bidding Techniques and Win More Auctions!

1. Don’t just bid the minimum auction price.

Why? Because most people will do that, so you need to beat them at their own game. For example, if the auction starts at $0.99, most people will place one bid at $0.99, and then wait to see if anyone else bids later. If someone else then bids, the $0.99 bidder will place another, single, but slightly higher bid. This is not a successful bidding strategy.

The right bidding strategy is to place a first bid up to the maximum you are willing to pay for the item.

How? By using the auction bidding system wisely. If the item starts at $0.99, and you are the first bidder, and you are willing to pay up to $5.00 for it, then plug the $5.00 amount into the bid box. The auction system will then place the lowest bid to get the auction going ($0.99), and keep the rest of your $5.00 secret, until someone else bids.

Then, if (for example) someone else bids up to $2.00 (and even if they bid at the last minute), the auction system will bid for you at the next bidding increment (probably another $0.25), so you will then win the auction at $2.25.

How can this work? Because your bid was first, and you told the system you would pay up to $5.00 for the item, your bid (all the way up to the $5.00 limit you set) will be "first in line," even if another bidder bids at the last minute.

2. Don’t bid just to "keep track" of an item you are interested in; protect your bidding.

Why? For two reasons: First, eBay and most other online auction systems provide another way for you to "keep track" of items you are interested in; the "Watch List". Second, every bid you place highlights an item (drawing attention to it, and possibly attracting other bidders) (see number 3, below).

Major auction systems "keep track" of items, this is done by placing an item on your own, personal "watch list." You do this by clicking "Watch this item" in any listing (it’s in "blue" at the upper right hand side of every listing, right above the "Seller information" box). Click this box, and the item will be placed on your watch list. You can then pay attention to what’s on your "watch list," rather than placing bids as a way of tracking what you’re interested in.

3. Keep your bidding "to yourself"- this will help you win more auctions.

Why? Because every bid you place highlights an item, drawing attention to it, and possibly attracting other bidders, and possibly raising the final sale price. As to the question of placing bids early or waiting until the last minute to bid, there are two schools of thought.

Sellers encourage early bidding, because they like to see interest in their items, and that interest may translate into a bidding war and/or interest in other items the seller has for sale. eBay also encourages early bidding, because it increases the likelihood an item will sell (meaning sales fees for the auctioneer), rather than someone having an item on their "watch list" but forgetting to bid (meaning lost sales fees for the auctioneer).

Some savvy buyers believe in bidding at the last minute or close to the last minute (for example, in the last hour of an auction), because potential bidders tend to follow what other people do (just like most people standing in a long checkout line at the supermarket, even though other checkout lines are shorter).

If you follow this line of thinking, then you believe that people may be more likely to bid on items that already have bids, even if the same item is listed by the same seller at the same starting price right below the one with the bid. If you are looking to gain an edge on bidding, consider this bidding strategy.

4. Don’t bid in even amounts.

Why? Because most people bid in even amounts and you may be able to beat them by bidding in UN-even amounts. For example, if an item starts at $0.99, and you are the first bidder, and you plan to place a "maximum bid" (like we discussed in number 1, above), consider not placing your maximum bid at $5.00. Instead, place the maximum bid at (for example) $5.27. True, that is $0.27 more than you planned to use as your maximum bid, but think of it this way:

Since most people bid in even amounts, don’t you think they will set their maximum bid at (for example) $5.00 – and do you really want to lose an item for $0.27? Also, remember that your bid (if it is the first bid on the item) will have priority over any other bids up to that amount – so, even if someone else bids $5.27 at the last minute, you will win the item for your maximum bid of $5.27 because your bid was placed first.

Note that this "priority" of bids rule can mean that you could lose an auction if the bids are the same amount. For example, if an earlier bidder set their maximum at $5.27, and you came in at the last minute with the same bid amount ($5.27), your last-minute bid will not be the winning bid, because the prior (first) bidder’s bid has priority.

This doesn’t happen very often (that two people have the same "maximum" bid amount), and is even less likely to happen if you choose UN-even bid amounts.)

5. Try using a third party auction “sniping” tool like Auction Sniper or AuctionInsights.com.

By automatically placing your bids at the last possible moment, these tools allow you to rest easy knowing that your competitors will have literally no time to react to your bid. Snipers automate the process of placing your eBay bid in the closing seconds of any eBay bidding auction, dramatically increasing your chance of winning; in essence you avoid revealing to other bidders know what your predetermined maximum purchase price.

While this may seem at first underhanded, it is a perfectly accepted practice in online auction bidding. If you are serious about winning bids, this is one of the most practical and sensible methods available.

Using different bidding strategies greatly increases your chances of winning online auctions. Good luck!
